Para el salvamento de la vida humana en la mar y el reconocimiento aéreo, Salvamento Marítimo cuenta con 11 helicópteros específicamente configurados para las labores de búsqueda y salvamento marítimo. Las bases se encuentran en Jerez, Gijón, Gando, Tenerife Sur, A Coruña, Valencia, Reus, Almería, Santander y Baleares. De los 11 helicópteros, 8 son propiedad de la Sociedad de Salvamento y Seguridad Marítima y 3 son fletados. Salvamento Martítimo, además de sus medios propios, se responsabiliza de coordinar la intervención de los medios pertenecientes a otras administraciones e instituciones colaboradoras, en las áreas correspondientes a la búsqueda, salvamento y lucha contra en la contaminación en la mar.
