Blazon[edit]

  • Shield: Argent, on a bend Azure three crosses patee Sable fimbriated Argent, in chief the insignia of the 78th Division and in base a mermaid both Proper.
  • Crest:
  1. That for the regiments and separate battalions of the Army Reserve: On a wreath of the colors (Argent and Azure) the Lexington Minute Man Proper.
  2. The statue of the Minute Man, Captain John Parker (H.H. Kitson, sculptor), stands on the Common in Lexington, Massachusetts.

Symbolism[edit]

  • Shield:
  1. Blue and white are the colors used for Infantry, the original unit designation.
  2. The shoulder sleeve insignia of the 78th Infantry Division represents the Regiment's service with that Division during World War I.
  3. The three crosses patee allude to the battle honors awarded the unit for service during World War I - St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne and Lorraine.
  4. The mermaid is used to indicate Southern New Jersey which is surrounded by beaches and is the place where the unit was organized in 1917.
  • Crest: The crest is that of the U.S. Army Reserve.

Background[edit]

  1. The coat of arms was originally approved for the 309th Infantry Regiment, Organized Reserves on 1923-05-25.
  2. It was redesignated for the 309th Regiment (Training), Army Reserve on 1962-01-30.
