Français : Tour de la Chaine, élevée entre 1382 et 90 à gauche, face à St-Nicolas, achevée en 1376. Les deux ouvrages commandent l'accès au Vieux-Port de La Rochelle (17), le dispositif complet comportant en plus la Lanterne, terminée un siècle après, plus en front de mer.
La première doit son nom au treuil manoeuvrant une lourde chaine, nécessaire à l'entrée et sortie des navires du bassin. Le capitaine de faction, logeant sur place, en profitait pour percevoir les droits de passage réglementaires... Plus tard, jusqu'au XVIIIe, elle accueille de nombreux détenus. Et même, au cours de sa longue et tumultueuse existence, dépôt de munitions sous Louis XIV, ce qui provoque son explosion ! St-Nicolas, haute de 37 m, offre pour sa part un panorama unique sur la ville, grâce à son chemin de ronde au 3e étage. |
