Description AWM caption : "CANBERRA, ACT. OCTOBER 1939. THE AMIENS GUN IN THE SAME CONFIGURATION AS IT WAS WHEN CAPTURED ON 8TH AUGUST 1918 BY MEMBERS OF THE AIF IN FRONT OF HARBONNIERES, NEAR VILLERS BRETONNEUX. THIS 28cm RAILWAY GUN WAS USED BY THE GERMANS TO SHELL AMIENS, SOME 15 MILES AWAY. DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR THE GUN WAS DISMANTLED WITH THE MOUNTING BEING LOANED TO THE AUSTRALIAN ARMY FOR EXPERIMENTAL WORK, THE BOGIES LOCATED AT THE ARMY CAMP AT BANDIANA, VICTORIA, AND THE BARREL, WEIGHING AN ESTIMATED 45 TONS, PLACED ON EXHIBITION AT THE AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL, CANBERRA."
