Blazon

  • Shield: Or, between two lances in saltire Proper with guidons Gules in pale a laurel wreath Vert enclosing five fleurs-de-lis, one, three and one and a mullet of the third within a bordure of the last.
  • Crest: That for the regiments and separate battalions of the Massachusetts Army National Guard:  On a wreath of the colors Or and Gules, a dexter arm embowed, clothed Blue and ruffed White Proper the hand grasping a broad sword Argent the pommel and hilt Or.
  • Motto: "Liberty, Union, and The Law"

Symbolism

  • Shield: The composition of the shield is that of the coat of arms for the 180th Field Artillery Battalion within a border to show descent of the 221st Field Artillery Battalion from the 180th Field Artillery Battalion.
  • Crest: The crest is that of the Massachusetts Army National Guard.

Background

The coat of arms was approved on 13 September 1943.  It was amended to correct the symbolism on 13 December 1943.  It was amended to correct the blazon of the shield on 5 January 1944.
