Summary[edit]
Description2022 IRT Substation No. 14 shortly before demolition.jpg |
English: The former IRT Substation 14 is a historic electrical substation located at 264-266 West 96th Street just west of the 96th Street Subway station of the IRT Broadway – Seventh Avenue Line, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City. It was one of eight original substations constructed by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company in 1904-05, and has a facade designed in the Beaux-Arts style. Originally powered by the landmarked coal-burning IRT powerhouse on 59th Street, which was designed by McKim, Mead & White, it was taken offline in 1990, and its ownership transferred from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to the City of New York; it is administered by the NYC Department of Housing Preservation & Development. In January 2022 it was reported that the building would soon be torn down to make way for a 23-story apartment building, 40% of which will be affordable housing. The exact timeline for the demolition was not known. The only one of the 8 original substations which is still online is Substation No. 17, the Dyckman-Hillside Substation, also on the Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line. (Description source: Gothamist) |
