| Description |
English: Located at Falls View Park in Cohoes, New York is this "tree of peace" planted in 2016 in a ceremony held jointly by Brookfield Renewable Power and the Hiawatha Institute for Indigenous Knowledge. It marks the site of one of the formative events in the pre-Columbian history of this region: it was here where Deganawida, a prophet and seer from the Onondaga tribe known by the sobriquet Great Peacemaker, first presented the Great Law of Peace (Gayanashagowa) to the local Mohawk people. This first step in the foundation of the Iroquois Confederacy - which was finalized some years later at a ratification council in Ganondagan, near the town of Victor, New York - occurred at an uncertain date that most scholars place within the rough range of 1200-1450 A.D.
