English: A U.S. Air Force C-17 jet takes off from McMurdo Station's Phoenix Airfield, transporting people and cargo to Christchurch, New Zealand. Phoenix Airfield is located on the Ross Ice Shelf. Airfield heavy equipment operators compact the snow to the hardness of concrete.
