Description
English: Tell Monument (Telldenkmal)

It is a memorial statue to the Swiss legendary folk hero William Tell. It is located in the Centre of the marketplace (Rathausplatz) of Altdorf, Canton Uri , Switzerland.

This monument was created by Richard Kissling between 1882 to 1895 as a Neoclassical sculpture. The date 1307 mentioned at the base of the monument refers to the Rütli Oath ((Rütlischwur) : the legendary oath taken at the foundation of the Old Swiss Confederacy in 1307 by the three founding Swiss cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden.

The statue depicts William Tell with an arm resting on his crossbow and the other outstretched holding the arrow that famously shot the apple off his son’s head and thereby saving them from immediate execution by the tyrannical town bailiff, Gessler. The location of the statue is supposedly where William Tell shot the apple for his freedom.

The origin of this folk tale is in 'William Tell', a verse drama in five acts by German dramatist Friedrich Schiller, published and produced in 1804 as Wilhelm Tell.
