Summary[edit]

Description
English: Le Penseur ("The Thinker"), originally called Le Poète ("The Poet"), originated as a small figure near the top of Auguste Rodin's large work La Porte d'Enfer ("The Gates of Hell"). It shows a nude male figure in bronze sitting on a rock with his chin resting on one hand as though deep in thought. There are about 28 full-sized castings, in which the figure is about 186 cm. high, as well as various other versions, several in plaster, and studies and posthumous castings exist in a range of sizes. The first full-scale model was presented at the Salon des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1904. A public subscription financed a bronze casting in 1906, which is now on display in the Jardin du Musée Rodin.
