Summary[edit]

Description

The tail fins (flukes) of the blue whale flip up when it dives back down into the water after coming to the surface to take a breath of air.

The waters off Sri Lanka are home to blue whales, the largest animals in the world today and the heaviest known to have ever existed on Earth. (Elephants are the largest land animals today and are also found in Sri Lanka.) Our whale-watching boat ride to the east out of Mirissa on the southern coast is nearly over before we finally find this blue whale breaching (coming to the surface for air). We have seen some dolphins but no other whales of any species.
