Description20160129 Sri Lanka 4165 Deniyaya sRGB (25142947483).jpg |
A tea picker along the steep and windy road between the town of Deniyaya and The Rainforest Ecolodge on the edge of the Sinharaja Forest Reserve. James Taylor (1835-1892) introduced tea plantations to British Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in 1867 after learning the basics of tea growing in India the previous year. Scottish grocer Thomas Lipton (1848-1931) visited Taylor in British Ceylon in 1890. Lipton purchased his own tea estates there so he could control quality and costs in order to sell a consistent tea experience at an affordable price. In 1893 he established the Thomas J Lipton Co. in Hoboken, New Jersey, to package and market tea using the advertising slogan “Direct from the tea gardens to the teapot.” The Sinharaja Forest Reserve became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
