| Description |
English: As seen early on a July 2015 morning, a tourist information center (yet to open for the day) is at the service of curious Trans-Canada Highway motorists who stop off at the famous Wawa Goose at the south end of the Ontario, Canada town of the same name. Dating to 1960 and situated where the TCH intersects with Route 101, this 28-foot stainless steel statue of a Canada goose is the most famous of a chain of offbeat roadside monuments that have been erected along this remote Northern Ontario stretch of the highway by local business interests; more specifically, it was the brainchild of local dry cleaning shop owner Al Turcott, who was instrumental in the effort to convince government planners to route the Schreiber-Sault Ste. Marie stretch of the highway along the shore of Lake Superior - one of two proposed options - but was dismayed when the highway ultimately detoured around, rather than through, Wawa's downtown. |
