Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Snider Flour Mill, seen here on a July 2015 morning, was long the economic linchpin of the community of St. Jacobs, Ontario, and is today among its oldest extant buildings. The exact date of its construction is not known, but its existence was noted in records dating to 1852, at which time it was owned by Jacob C. Snyder (1791-1865), who'd arrived in town just a few years earlier as a member of the first major wave of white settlement in the region, comprised of Mennonites of Swiss German ethnicity who emigrated by way of Pennsylvania. However, the mill is better known for its later owner, the similarly-monikered but unrelated Elias W. B. Snider (1842-1921), scion of a locally prominent milling family who in St. Jacobs innovated the Walzenstuhle process of flour rolling whose superior quality gave the product wide renown all over North America and Britain. Thoroughly restored, the mill now serves as studio and retail space for a community of artists and artisans.
