Summary[edit]

Description
English: The morning sun lends a golden glow to the streetscape along Macdonell Street in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. The scene typifies the Victorian-era architecture of the city's downtown area, mainly built using cream-colored native limestone. One of the first planned cities in Ontario, the layout of downtown Guelph was designed in the mid-19th century by city founder John Galt, who planned a radiating street grid punctuated with numerous large public spaces. To a great degree, the integrity of this initial design remains today, and is vigorously championed and defended by a preservation-minded citizenry. In the background at left is the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate, a National Historic Site of Canada that was dedicated in 1888 after a twelve-year period of construction. It's considered the masterwork of the noted Irish-Canadian architect Joseph Connolly, who here utilizes a Gothic Revival design with intricate and skillfully executed stained glass. As seen in July 2015.
