Title
2012T28 Post Medieval dress hook
Description
English: TREASURE CASE 2012 T28 Post Medieval Dress Hook

Description: Silver-gilt dress hook of Read's Early Post Medieval Class D Type 6. The main plate is sub-triangular with small, semi-circular projections around the outer edges. There are three applied domed bosses on the upper surface of the plate. There is a central circular hole in the main plate, located at the junction between the three raised domes. Each of the domes has a central applied knop. There are six further knops arranged at regular intervals around the central knop, with each alternating knop surrounded by two rings of applied silver wire. There is a rectangular loop and hook soldered onto the reverse of the plate, with the hook extending further than the back plate. There is a small incised 'X' on the outer surface of the rectangular loop. Traces of gilding are visible on the front and back surfaces. It is 26.12mm long, 20.35mm wide, 6.27mm thick increasing to 9.86mm thick to include the loop and hook. It weighs 4.65 grams.

The dress hook is similar to Read (2008) Hooked-clasps & eyes, page 78 number 261.

Discussion: The object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal and is over 300 years old. Consequently it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
