Summary[edit]

Description

After introducing the Genesis in the US in mid-2008, Hyundai stepped up its luxury car game. The Equus luxury flagship, formerly a badge-engineered front-wheel-drive Mitsubishi, was completely redesigned as a larger version of the rear-wheel-drive Genesis. Shortly after it entered production and South Korean domestic sales in early 2009, Hyundai shipped 100 pre-production examples to the US, for road testing and consumer reaction prior to possible US sales. The response was good - and Hyundai would go ahead and release the Equus for the US market in December 2010.

This is one of the preproduction Korean domestic models, serving as a floor sample in summer 2009 at the largest Hyundai dealership in Southern California.

The VS460 comes with the 4.6-liter Tau V8 engine also used in the export Genesis. It is the upscale trim level for the Korean domestic market - but became the only engine option for the US market. The base Equus, the VS380 with the 3.8-liter Lambda V6, is not available in the US. The long-wheelbase Equus, with 5.0-liter version of the Tau, is not available in the US or any other export market (however, the 5.0-liter engine would become US standard equipment for 2012 - and top-range option for the 2012 Genesis as well). Also for the US market, the grille bars became horizontal, and the hood ornament was reduced to a badge for pedestrian safety and aesthetics reasons.

Pricing for a top-of-the-line Equus VS460 is in excess of ₩100 million, or USD $80,000. (At least Korean prices do include the 10% sales tax.) For the US market, some of the more exotic options are removed, for a lower starting price of USD $58,000, topping out closer to USD $65,000.
