Description1 man riding horse prehistoric rock cave painting Bhimbetka Bhopal Madhya Pradesh India February 2013.jpg |
Near Bhimbetka is a series of rock shelters where early stone-age people lived and left impressive rock paintings, from about 9000 to 5000 years ago. Here we see a person riding a horse (there are several more), in a painting about 9000 years old. This is remarkable, since it is the Aryans who are supposed to have introduced the horse (and horse riding) to the subcontinent when they migrated here from about 1500 BC. Clearly these much older people also did ride horses, but probably didn't have the horse husbandry skills yet that the Aryans brought with them. |
