Summary[edit]

Description

Didier Pironi drove for Ferrari in the 1981 and 1982 seasons. In 1981 the car was the 126CK and in 1982 it was substantially revised by Dr. Harvey Postlethwaite resulting in the 126C2. It was a skirted, ground effect chassis, and the first full monococque Ferrari built for F1. The original CK was mechanically adequate but suffered from poor aerodynamics and an underdeveloped engine. But the combination was faster than the normally aspirated 312T5. The C2 had drag and downforce more in line with the mainstream, and more reliable, consistent, boost control. More power didn't hurt.

Giles Villeneuve was the senior driver at Ferrari, #27, thus Pironi's team mate in 1981 and 1982. Villeneuve died during the last minutes of practice at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix, run that year at Zolder. Pironi suffered catestrophic leg injuries in a crash during practice at the German Grand Prix, only 7 races later, ending his carreer in F1. He had led the F1 World Championship, with 39 points but Keke Rosberg of TAG Williams Team finished the season with 44 points, giving the Cosworth 3.0 litre V8 its last drivers' championship. With both Ferrari drivers from the start of the season absent, Rosberg finished 3rd, 2nd, 1st, 8th and 5th for Williams in the last five races of the season.
