Summary[edit]

Description
English: 19thC Graffiti, Wainstones "T CAIL 1828". In 1828 the first public railway from Darlington to Stockton had only been opened for three years. Tourism as we know it could be said to have begun with the invention of the bicycle towards the end of the 19th century. For the working classes free time was a rare commodity. So who was Mr. Cail? My money is on a local stone waller or one of the jet miners. It was not his first visit. Another piece of his graffiti is dated 1823.
