Summary[edit]
Description1980s Hyundai Pony Pickup (Korea Domestic) - Flickr - skinnylawyer.jpg |
Over twenty years on the road, and still looking great as a daily driver. With South Korea's automotive culture maturing, plus growing nostalgia for the exciting years of postwar industrialization, the Hyundai Pony, produced from 1974 to 1988 and once the wallflower in the midst of more modern cars, is now a very desirable collector item. It was also far more reliable than some of its successors, including the notorious Excel. It bears remembering that the Pony was the first-ever automobile that South Korea could rightfully call its own, as Hyundai had developed it in-house (although using many foreign-designed components) rather than licensing an existing foreign model. The pickup truck version of the second-generation Pony can be found here and there, if I look carefully enough. Other versions are much harder to find - most of them were prematurely scrapped to start with, and the few survivors are likely hidden in private garages and museums. Back in the Pony era, as the automotive culture was still new and also many people did not know how to properly maintain their cars, it was very rare for a car to last 10 years. But now, 15-year-old cars are quite common. It also helps that modern-day Korean cars are vastly superior to their predecessors. |
