中文（臺灣）：這批相片為台灣新生報記者於1979年7月1日拍攝，主題為臺灣西部幹線鐵路電氣化通車典禮。縱貫線基隆高雄間（包含山線、海線）電化工程完成，自強號列車於上午8點40分由臺北車站發車，途中停靠臺中車站，於12點40分抵達高雄站後，舉辦全線通車典禮。典禮由臺灣省主席林洋港主持，高雄市長王玉雲亦出席盛會，儀式結束後列車自高雄開回臺北。巧合的是，這天同為高雄市由省轄市升格為院轄市首日。

西部幹線鐵路電氣化工程為十大建設之一，1973年10月發生第一次石油危機，行政院長蔣經國推行十項大型基礎建設計畫以刺激經濟景氣。鐵路電氣化除了能增進運輸效率外，也可降低對石油的依賴。工程於1974年7月開工，歷時5年完工，期間各路段分別通車。縱貫線之前行駛蒸汽或柴油火車，北高路程最快需4小時40分，電氣化將北高路程縮短至4小時，而目前普悠瑪號列車行駛時間僅需3小時36分。

西部鐵路電氣化完工時，環島鐵路中的屏東線與宜蘭線尚未電氣化，臺東線拓寬計畫仍在進行，北迴鐵路即將通車，南迴鐵路尚未動工。1991年南迴鐵路完工標誌著環島鐵路網的成形，而環島鐵路電氣化則於2020年12月23日南迴線枋寮知本段通車後完成，距西部幹線電氣化通車歷時41年。
