English: Peter Pan Diner - Place mat - Allentown PA
The Peter Pan Diner first opened in Kuhnsville in July 1956. It was first owned by Stelios Kavounas. The diner was a stainless-steel Mountain View manufactured diner. When it opened, the diner was a post-movie destination for people who enjoyed the films at the Super Skyway drive-in, which was close to the diner. It sold many hamburgers, fries, and chocolate milkshakes The original diner destroyed in a gas explosion on 27 September 1958, that injured four firemen. It was replaced with a new one of the same type, which reopened on 5 April 1959. The original owner filed for bankruptcy in March 1961 and the property was taken over by the Kuhn family who owned the property. Due to its location off US 22, and the motels in Kuhnsville, the diner steadily became a major stop for both travelers and truckers going between New York City and Harrisburg, as well as on the Northeast Extension of the turnpike who got off at the Allentown exit. People would stay at the motels at night and get breakfast at the diner before leaving and continuing their travel. The family ran the diner until 1976 when it was sold to Kenny Kayne, who ran it for a number of years. in 1989 the diner was sold to Chris Kyrkopoulos, renaming it "Chris's Family Restaurant". Kyrkopoulos closed the diner in June, 1991 after he built a new, larger brick and steel restaurant next door. The old stainless-steel diner from 1959 was purchased in June 1992, and moved to Falmouth, Massachusetts. It was restored to looking like it did when it was new, and reopened as Betsy's Diner at 457 Main Street. Becky's is still open today. |
