Seen at Petersen Automotive Museum, Los Angeles, California. Following on the heels of the 1956 Land Cruiser, this model became Toyota's first US-market passenger car. The Toyopet, in production since 1949, had done very well within Japan, being continually improved to be suitable for the cut-rate Japanese roads of the day. But when this 1958 Toyopet arrived in the US, it found itself too small, too underpowered, and overpriced to compete. Toyota managed to sell only 287 copies before withdrawing from the US market in 1960; of those, only five, including this example on loan from Toyota USA Museum, survive. Toyota would eventually return to the US passenger car market with the 1965 Corona, a car far more suitable for US duty. The Corona, in turn, was replaced in 1983 by the front-wheel-drive Camry, which went on to become America's best selling car. Today, the Camry, built in the Bible Belt and raced on NASCAR circuits, is as American as country fried chicken steak - and a proud descendant of this humble Toyopet. |
