English: This is a soap box derby racer driven by Ernst Krönert (1943-2018) who took 1st place in the Kassel, Germany local race in 1957. From 2022 till 2021 the extant car was put on display at the Kassel Museum in an exhibit entitled Es lebe der Sport! This illustration by Bill Wrigley is a still taken from a digital 3D model created by the author at Classic Soap Box Derby Racers (1933-1999).
Deutsch: Es lebe der Sport! – Von der Seife zum Rennsport
Bereits 1904 fand im hessischen Oberursel das erste „Kinderautomobilrennen“ der Welt statt. Die Sportart verbreitete sich schnell in ganz Deutschland und fand auch in der USA gefallen. Ein amerikanischer Seifenhersteller prägte den Namen der Seifenkiste, er fügte seinen Seifenpackungen Anleitungen zum Bau der Kinder-Rennwagen bei, die seitdem nur noch „soap boxes“ – Seifenkisten – genannt wurden. Auch Kassel hat eine lange Seifenkistenrenntradition. Seit 1947 düsten die Kinder durch den Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, später wurde bis 1970 der Graf-Bernadotte-Platz genutzt. Die hier gezeigte Seifenkiste war das Siegermodell des Rennens von 1957, das der damals vierzehnjährige Ernst Krönert (1943-2018) selbst gebaut hatte. Die vom ADAC deutschlandweit organisierten Seifenkistenrennen standen seit 1950 unter der Schirmherrschaft des Unternehmens Opel AG. Die jungen Rennbegeisterten mussten ihre Fahrzeuge unter Einhaltung genauer Regeln selbst bauen – häufig im schulischen Werkunterricht. Den Bundessiegern winkte als Hauptpreis eine Reise in die USA. |
