Summary[edit]

Description

I am visiting the Imperial Palace's car collection, where I can see many extremely unusual cars, most of which are actually for sale.

Here is the ultimate in 1950s marketing: a Dodge Custom Royal Lancer coupe, offered in colors, upholstery, and packages that are supposed to be appealing to women.

The La Femme was the recognition of the fact that more and more women were taking to the road, and that cars had to be offered with qualities that appeal to them. However, the way the car was executed was more of a product of the rather patronizing culture of the day, when women were expected to be soft and demure rather than aggressive and assertive, and stay home and be good housewives and mothers rather than being full equals of men.

Nevertheless, I am fascinated by the fact that the La Femme came with an accessories box, with matching cosmetics and cigarette lighters. (Yes, it was the 1950s, when smoking was "cool" and before people realized the dangers of tobacco.) And while this 1956 La Femme did not come with a matching purse, the 1955 La Femme did.

According to Wikipedia, the La Femme was a $143 option package, sold only for model years 1955 and 1956, and it is believed that fewer than 2500 were ever made, of which at least 60 are known to survive.
