Summary[edit]

Description

After Germany lost another war, World War II, and its economy was in a shambles, it was time for a simple, durable automobile. Mercedes-Benz developed the Ponton, its first automobile with the now-conventional "three box" architecture and one that did not require an external running board.

The Ponton was indeed very durable, if modest in performance. And now it is considered the ancestor of all Mercedes-Benz sedans that followed it, including the 2010 E-class that I just picked up just hours before. In fact, the rear fender bulge of the W212 E-class (which Mercedes-Benz North America calls the "Ninth Generation") is a flashback to the rear fender bulge of the Ponton.
