Summary
[edit]Description18th Century Waymarking - geograph.org.uk - 922030.jpg |
English: 18th Century Waymarking Stone direction marker of 1774 at a major 18th century cross-roads. The route along the ridge was a major highway in 1774 and the stone guide-post (a pentagon I think) indicates the direction of travel. The two visible faces say Rotherham/ Sheffield and Barnsley/ Doncaster. According to `The Penistone Scene' by R.N.Brownhill this stone, along with many others in the country was buried in 1940 `with the threat of invasion becoming a reality ... It was not until some 44 years later that a local farmer, after much searching found it and restored it to its former site'. |
