18 June 1815 – Waterloo – Mont-Saint-Jean, Tablet

Summary[edit]

Description
English: The long awaited decision to save the Mont-Saint-Jean farm from its sorry state of abandon was taken by the local authorities in October 2011 – not an instant too soon. By then, this 1981 tablet was seen on the ground, leaning against the outer wall (facing road N.5), awaiting a more dignified display. As soon as the repair works began, it was inserted, early 2012, into the still bare brick-wall on the right of the entrance gate, where it is today.

Every house in the neighbourhood was used for the wounded ; the farm of Mont-St.-Jean was the chief hospital, or the head-quarters for the medical staff. (Edward Cotton, A Voice from Waterloo, 5th edition, 1854, 34, n.)
Indeed, the farm had been selected on the 17th of June by the Deputy Inspector John Gunning to serve as field ambulance for the British Army.
