18 June 1815 – Victory at Waterloo – King's German Legion Monument, The South Face

Summary[edit]

Description
English: A quadrilingual (en, de, fr, nl) information board has been affixed on the eastern side (not visible on this photo) of the monument for the 2015 commemorations of the Battle of Waterloo. It reads :

(en) – The King's German Legion was a major British military unit that was raised in 1803 by Lieutenant Colonel Johann Friedrich von der Decken and Major Colin Hackett on the order of King George III. The Legion consisted mainly of officers and troops from the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Hanover which had been ruled by the King of Great Britain since 1714. The unit fought on several fronts during the Napoléonic Wars, including in Waterloo in 1815, where under the high command of the Duke of Wellington and the direct command of Major George von Baring it defended the La Haye Sainte farm. After the Legion was disbanded in 1816, its soldiers to a large extent joined the armed forces of the newly-established Kingdom of Hanover.
As foot note : This monument was restored in 2014 by the Federal Republic of Germany with the participation of the von der Decken family and other Hanoverian families.

NOTE. Contrary to what is sometimes asserted, the common grave for about 4000 victims of La Haye Sainte combat is not underneath the Hanoverian Monument (and couldn't possibly be), but further down the road, in front of the farm, as this 1816 etching by Rouse shows : ►(File:Plate L from 'An Historical Account of the Campaign in the Netherlands' by William Mudford (1817).jpg).
