[edit]Description1858 San Francisco Mission District - Las Camaritas Land Grant.png |
English: Cleaned segment of 1858 San Francisco Map.
The three Van Ness Ordinances of 1856 to 1858 resulted in the creation and mapping of the Western Addition neighborhood of San Francisco. These five manuscript maps were likely made to show the existing land claims in relation to the newly platted streets, parks, and other public spaces. They may have been used in the subsequent resolution of the various land claims. They show many interesting artifacts of the early settlement of the area before it was officially made a part of the city in the mid 1850's. The 1858 date of the five maps is estimated, based on the creation of the Van Ness map in the same year. Part of the Mission district is also covered. |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |

This is a segment of the much larger 1858 map. Names of the main north to south streets have been adjusted to properly fit within this segment. The original at Rumsey.com includes paper damages on the property called "FADEN GREEN", located due west of the willows between 17th and 18th St. and Guerrero and Valencia St. Of interest is the fact that this same area is where the original map is damaged was also the location where some of the worst 1906 earthquake damages took place.
Other than the removal of a few stains, the street names and the map being adjusted to obtain a square north to south alignment no other edits have been made.
