Prevotella melaninogenica

Summary[edit]

Description
English: This image depicts a Petri dish culture plate that had given rise to mixed bacterial colonial growth, predominated by Prevotella melaninogenica, formerly known as Bacteroides melaninogenicus. The inoculum had been obtained from a rectal swab applied to this blood agar medium, and allowed to grow for a 5-day period, at a temperature of 35°C. P. melaninogenica is a normal floral inhabitant of the human oral and vaginal cavities, and has been recovered from anaerobic infections involving the respiratory tract, brain abscesses, urinary tract infections, to name a few.
