Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Kalpasutra is a Jain text. It recites the lives of the 24 Jaina Tirthankaras. The manuscripts of this text are found in Jain monasteries and typically illustrated with miniature paintings. It is recited during Paryusan.

Kalpasutra is believed by Jains to be an ancient text, tradition attributed by Bhadrabahu. That text was lost in the early part of the common era. According to Paul Dundas, the text now available was written by Jinasena of the 9th-century CE.

The above photo is of a manuscript copied on paper between 1509 CE and 1566 CE, and is now MS 4464 of the Schoyen Collection, near Oslo, Norway. It is written in Ardhamagadhi Prakrit on paper, Devanagari script.

This is a photograph of a two-dimensional manuscript copied in the 16th-century from a much older text. Therefore and PD-Art and PD-US-expired guidelines of wikimedia commons apply. Any rights I have as a photographer, I herewith donate to wikimedia commons under CC 4.0.
