| Description |
English: An old Hindu temple in Kanchi, and the only major Shakti (goddess) temple. Renovated and expanded after the 11th-century. Many inscriptions.
Kamakshi is the Parvati avatar. In Hindu legends, she is the maiden form who wants to marry Shiva. She becomes and lives like a yogini to attract and win over Shiva the yogi. She is treated as an equal of Shiva in the Hindu tradition. The temple features many equivalent manifestations of the goddess including Tripurasundari, Saraswati and Lakshmi. This is an important site for Kamakoti Peetam. Adi Shankara is believed to have included this temple as representative of the goddess tradition of Hinduism, in his vision of spiritually unified, integrated traditions of Hinduism. |
