Description
Italiano: Porta Verona è uno dei due ingressi principali alla città di Peschiera e faceva parte della struttura difensiva del centro storico. Vi si accede attraverso un ponte di cotto chiamato Ponte dei Voltoni. Risale ai tempi della dominazione veneziana, come testimonia la scritta latina posta sulla trabeazione a monito degli stranieri: DISCE HAEC MONEAT PRAECELSA LEONIS IMAGO NE STIMULES VENETI CEV LEO IN HOSTE VIGENT MDLIII (Che tu sappia. Questa eccelsa immagine del leone ti dissuada dal provocare i Veneti giacché essi contro il nemico hanno il vigore del leone 1553). Di quel leone è oggi visibile solo il solco lasciato dalle truppe napoleoniche che invasero la città e distrussero l'effige della Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia. Oltre Porta Verona spiccano il giallo e rosso, simboli delle armi italiane e austriache, che colorano la Caserma d'Artiglieria di Porta Verona, grande arsenale fatto costruire da Radetzky nella piazzaforte di Peschiera tra il 1854 e il 1857. Restaurato e aperto al pubblico nel 2002, è oggi sede della Biblioteca Civica e dell'Archivio Storico del Comune.
