WHEN THE BABY GETS SICK 317 grains to the pint, or a pinch of salt, a little sugar, a littlecocoa or extract of vanilla may be added. As a rule the childshould be given plenty of water, which must first be filteredand boiled. ADMINISTERING FOOD TO THE SICK CHILD. The child should be fed regularly, and should be al-lowed sufficient time to eat in a leisurely manner. He should be assisted when necessary, andentertained with interesting andcheerful conversation. When thechild is helpless, the nurse placesher hand beneath the pillow andraises the head slowly and gent-ly, keeping it straight so as toprevent the food coming out ofthe side of the mouth, but notbending it so far forward as tomake swallowing difficult. Thechild should be fed with a medi-cine cup or tumbler, whichshould never be more than halffull, with a glass orchina feedingcup, a spoon, a medicine dropper,a nursing bottle, or through aglass or rubber tube.
