Text Appearing Before Image:
Skull at Birth. Showing the Fontanelles. as seen from above, is normally round or oval, the circum-ference being about thirteen inches. The head of a newly-born child may have a startling shape, as the result of pro-longed pressure. One side may be flattened while the otherbulges, or the head may be long and narrow. The idiotic ex-pression that such a shape sometimes imparts to an infantoften causes much distress, alarm and anxiety to the parents. In almost every case, however, the abnormal appearancedoes not represent a permanent deformity but passes away, usually in a few days or a few months. No attempt shouldever be made to squeeze the head into shape. Just behind the forehead is a diamond-shaped spot, about three-eighths of an inch to an inch and a quarter long
Text Appearing After Image:
THE NORMAL INFANT 221 and seven-eighths of an inch wide, where the bone is absent, the brain being covered only by a thin membrane and theskin. This is known as the anterior fontanelle. Depressionof this spot indicates that the child is not properly nour-ished. The spot seems to enlarge as the infant growsolder, up to about the ninth month, but the increase maybe apparent rather than real. From the ninth to the twelfthmonth it seems to remain about the same size; it then grad-ually becomes smaller and should be closed by the nine-teenth or twentieth month. At the back of the head is asmaller and less significant opening, known as the posteriorfontanelle. The Face at Birth.—The face in infancy occupies onlyone-eighth as much space as the rest of the head. Not un-commonly, at birth, it is swollen and the features are outof shape. This is usually due to pressure and will soon passaway. The eyes are of a dull, grayish blue, expressionlessand almost always half open when the child is awak
