Description-conservationlands15 Social Media Takeover, May 15, Oregon National Historic Trail (17074087184).jpg |
The BLM’s National Conservation Lands include some of the West’s most spectacular landscapes, from national monuments to wilderness to national scenic and historic trails. The BLM conducts day-to-day management on about 6,000 miles of congressionally-designated national scenic and historic trails in 14 states. Nearly every BLM field office manages one or more of these trails, and works closely with other Federal agencies and partners. What makes a trail officially scenic or historic? National Scenic Trails provide outdoor recreation opportunities as well as conservation of the significant geographic characteristics, such as desert and forests. National Historic Trails follow as closely as possible and practicable the original trails or routes of travel of national historic significance. The BLM manages more miles of National Historic Trails than any other Federal land management agency. Pictured here, two well-known historic trails managed by the BLM – the Iditarod National Historic Trail in Alaska and the Oregon National Historic Trail through Idaho, Oregon, and Wyoming. The Oregon Trail Backcountry Byway in Idaho and National Historic Trails Interpretive Center in Casper, Wyoming, are great stops along the Oregon Trail for education and recreation. |
