Summary[edit]

Description

Title: Fish and Wildlife Biologist

Duty station: Palm Springs Fish and Wildlife Office

Who is your Female Conservation Hero or Mentor? Of course the classics – Rachel Carson and Mardy Murie – but here in the FWS, Cynthia Martinez, who is currently acting Chief of the National Wildlife Refuge System, took me under her wing 17 years ago and showed me the ways of the FWS world. She continues to be committed to conservation and one of the great leaders in our agency – someone I look up to.

Where did you go to school or military branch? U.C. Santa Barbara

What did you study? Biological Sciences/Botany

How did you get interested in conservation? While at school in Santa Barbara, my plant taxonomy professor introduced me to the diversity of the California flora and the importance of maintaining that diversity through conservation; I was sold.

What’s your favorite species and why?

The mighty, majestic oak tree – any species. They’re so statuesque and hearty and provide habitat and forage for so many other species – they’re a keystone.
