Description
日本語: 日本での仏舎利（お釈迦様の遺骨）の代替品として一般的とされる、舎利石（しゃりいし）と呼ばれる石英質（SiO2／瑪瑙）の礫（れき：区分は細礫～中礫）。大きな石が波で削られて小さくなったのではなく、溶岩が冷えて固まった際にできた気泡（隙間）に後から石英質の成分が入り込んだもの。海中にある舎利母石（しゃりぶいし）という母石（または母岩）が波などの侵食を受けてそれら石英質の粒がそのまま。或いは波により他の石と擦れ合う水摩礫（すいまれき）の状態で波打ち際に打ち上げられる。舎利石の定義としては青森県の今別町から平舘およびその周辺で採取できる白または飴色の光る石とされ、古くから仏舎利として重宝されてきた経緯がある。近代に入り舎利浜は護岸工事により浜は姿を消したため、こうして打ち上げられるものはごく僅かであり、舎利浜から採れた舎利石は神聖視されがちであると同時に希少性から非常に価値が高いものとされる。
