歴史 古くから薬湯として知られ、平安時代にはすでに温泉として開湯されていた歴史があり、江戸時代には湯治に訪れる人も多かった。
昭和48年に大迫ダムが完成した際に温泉はダムに沈んだが、その後ボーリングによって源泉を掘り当て、山鳩湯旅館が営業を始めて温泉は復活した。 ダムに沈んでから復活した温泉は、他にも日中温泉、鶴の湯温泉、大牧温泉、猿ヶ京温泉、大塩温泉などがある。
