| Description |
English: Commonly known as cuckoo spit, frog spit or snake spit, this froth seen under leaves of certain shrubs is built by the nymphal form of several insects.
Contrary to common belief, the foam is not a collection of eggs. Rather they are formed during the nymphal to adult transformation phase of an insect. The froth serves a number of purposes. It hides the nymph from the view of predators and parasites, it insulates against heat and cold, thus providing thermal control and also moisture control. Without the froth the bug would quickly dry up. The nymphs pierce plants and suck sap causing damage, and much of the excess filtered fluids go into the production of the froth, which has an acrid taste, deterring predators. പലപ്പോഴും തെറ്റിദ്ധരിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ ഇവ മുട്ടകളോ പക്ഷി, തവള, പാമ്പ് തുടങ്ങിയ ജീവികൾ സ്രവിക്കുന്ന ഉമിനീർ കട്ടിയായതോ അല്ല. വിട്ടിൽ‌പ്പത കൊണ്ടു് ഇത്തരം പ്രാണികൾക്കു് മറ്റു ജീവികളിൽനിന്നു് സംരക്ഷണം, ചൂടിൽ നിന്നും തണുപ്പിൽ നിന്നുമുള്ള രക്ഷ, തക്കതായ ഈർപ്പത്തിന്റെ പരിപാലനം തുടങ്ങിപല പ്രയോജനങ്ങളും ഉണ്ടു്. ആതിഥേയസസ്യത്തിന്റെ നീരു് വലിച്ചൂറ്റിയെടുത്ത് ഭക്ഷ്യാവശ്യങ്ങൾക്കുശേഷം അവശേഷിക്കുന്ന ഭാഗമാണു് ഇത്തരം പ്രാണികൾ വിട്ടിൽപത ആക്കി മാറ്റുന്നതു്. |
