Summary[edit]
DescriptionЧубатий гусак IMG20230917173725.jpg |
(Anatidae Leach, 1820).
English: The Tufted Roman goose is an breed of domestic goose (Anser anser domesticus & Anser cygnoides domesticus Linnaeus, 1758) from the genus Anser (Anser Brisson, 1760) of the family Anatidae (Anatidae Leach, 1820).
The Tufted Roman goose is a small, compact lightweight breed of goose that is characterized by a tuft of feathers on top of its head. It is a very friendly, prolific goose. It must be noted that the Tufted Roman goose is "tufted" and not "crested". This breed weighs between 10 and 12 pounds. In some poultry breeds the tuft or crest is a result of extra skin or skull shape, but in the Tufted Roman goose, its head feathers grow longer and upright in that small area. Roman geese should be pure white, according to the American Poultry Association’s American Standard of Perfection, although some strains have gray or buff feathers. It is not known when the first tufted birds appeared in the breed, but literature of the early 1900’s, cites that many Roman geese had a small crest at the back of the head. Some waterfowl authors believe this is not the only possible explanation of the origin of the modern Tufted Roman. When it comes to domestic goose breeds, you aren’t going to find anything older than the Roman Goose. First domesticated 2,000 years ago, the Roman Tufted Goose is thought to be the oldest breed that still exists. It was pretty important in the past too, forming a focal point of ancient Roman religion.English: Tufted goose in Pamukkale, Turkey |
