Портрет детей Волконских с арапом

На портрете изображены двоюродные сестры: княжна Елизавета Григорьевна (1838–1891), дочь гофмейстера князя Г.П.Волконского, и княжна Софья Дмитриевна (1841–1875), дочь гофмейстера князя Д.П.Волконского. Портрет вполне может быть назван парадным, ибо девочки, несмотря на юный возраст, изображены в придворных парадных платьях. Появление подобного костюма связано с Указом Николая I от 27 февраля 1834 года, вводившего специальную "форму" придворных платьев. Стремление демонстрировать в платьях народные национальные элементы привело к тому, что они стали украшаться золотым шитьем, а сам крой напоминал русское распашное одеяние далеких времен. Добавим к этому стилизованные "долгие" (длинные) рукава красного бархатного одеяния, и получится то, что иронически прозвали "офранцуженный сарафан". Стилизованный кокошник на голове пятилетней Елизаветы (вообще-то кокошник – женский крестьянский головной убор) подчеркивает, что придворная дама – всегда Дама, несмотря на возраст. Написанный в Петербурге после триумфального возвращения из Италии с итогом вдумчивой работы – картиной "Последний день Помпеи", портрет в очередной раз демонстрирует блистательное живописное мастерство Карла Брюллова.
