Summary[edit]

Description

Last year, Roy Søreng found these axes with few meters between them during a search with detector at the infileds of Arne Jakob Jakobsen in Rødde, Melhus.

Harald Bentz Høgseth, Norway’s top expert on axes, have studied the finding and estimate that the largest axe (16,5 cm long) can be dated back to the 1200s. Determining the age of the smallest axe (13,5 cm long), known as a Long-bearded axe because of the “long-bearded” indentation behind the blade, is more uncertain. It can date back to late 1100s and as long as until the early 1600s. Since the axes is found near each other we assume that both are from the 1200s. The axes are still not restored, so what you see on the picture is rust and remains from soil attached to the original iron-head. Restoring iron takes time, often up to several years, and it is never certain whether it is possible to restore their original shape.
