Summary[edit]

Description

German born missionary Carl Sylvius Volkner arrived in New Zealand in 1849, and died in dramatic circumstances less than 20 years later. Initially based in Taranaki, he relocated to Opōtiki in 1861 to head the Church Missionary Society station. Here, with tensions of the New Zealand Wars increasing, Volkner was accused of spying for the Crown, and against his own Te Whakatōhea congregation. Regular trips to Auckland were viewed with suspicion and Te Ara notes that these fears were well founded. Letters Volkner wrote to Governor George Grey confirm the allegations.

Ignoring words of caution, he returned to Opōtiki from an Auckland visit and was subsequently taken prisoner. The next day Volkner was hanged, and his body later beheaded and his eyes eaten.

These images are of a letter from John White to the Crown, transferred to Archives New Zealand from the Justice Department. White lists Māori he suspects as being involved in the murder, stating “these may be the men who killed Volkner”. However, another man, Kereopa Te Rau, along with others, was tried and later executed for the crime.
