| Description | This sign marks the site of the room used to store chemicals like DDT. The Khmer Rouge lunatics had some rather twisted mantras, one of them being, it's no use to keep you, it's no loss to kill you. Another was better to kill an innocent by mistake than to spare an enemy by mistake. So with a 'save bullets' policy in force, most people were simply bludgeoned to death, hit with the digging instruments after they had been made to dig their own grave, or dispatched violently with a machete. Some simply had their faces bashed in Khmer Rouge soldiers who objected to killing the innocent met with a similar fate. The DDT stored here served a dual purpose: one it served to hide the stench from the many rotting corpses that had been loosely buried. Second, it served to finish the executioner's job in the case of those that had been buried alive, i.e. before they had actually died. (Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Apr/ May 2014) |
