Summary[edit]

Description
English: 'Aerial archaeology' from West Hill Traces of two Romano-British homesteads and field systems picked out with light snow on the east side of The Bell http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/collections/nsmr03abstracts/1394.html Unbeknown to me at the time, there is an almost identical photo (Fig 7.11) to this (in raking light, but no snow) in the English Heritage published book, Hillforts, by Al Oswald et al. (2006). The authors' caption is of a pair of Roman Iron Age 'scooped enclosures' dug into the slopes of the earlier (probably Iron Age) cultivation terraces, and served by a series of track-ways (hollow-ways) rising up from the College Burn valley. Unseen by me, they also pointed out the clear rectangular long-house, built in much later, medieval times, within the right hand enclosure.
