Detalle de la escultura 'A pesar de todo' de Jesús Contreras (1882-1948). "Una de las obras más importantes de Jesús Contreras es la escultura en mármol llamada Malgré tout -que quiere decir "a pesar de todo"- por la que recibió el Gran Premio de Escultura en la Exposición Universal de 1900, que se llevó a cabo en París. También recibió entonces la Cruz de Caballero de la Legión de Honor, conferida por la República Francesa por primera ocasión a un artista latinoamericano. Malgré tout -conmovedora escultura que representa a una hermosa mujer desnuda, encadenada y tendida en el piso- se encuentra ahora en el Museo Nacional de Arte de la ciudad de México después de haber estado muchos años en la Alameda Central de la capital de la República Mexicana." "Alrededor de 1900, Manuel M. Ponce se inspiró en la tragedia del escultor Jesús Contreras y escribió Malgré tout, una pieza para piano destinada a tocarse solamente con la mano izquierda. El título de la pieza lleva el mismo nombre que la famosa escultura del infortunado Jesús Contreras [...] Malgré tout, de Ponce está en ritmo de habanera, que es un tipo de danza popular que tomó su nombre de La Habana, capital de Cuba." |
