A steel cylinder passing through the top of the two sides of the frame is connected to a lever and cylindrical weights on one end and a heavy gear on the other. A second steel cylinder about a foot below and parallel to the first passes through a heavy wheel suspended within the frame. A horseshoe-shaped "iron step" with a foot plate extends out in front of the machine and is attached to a lever at the machine's base. The user steps on the plate, which releases the lever and allows the plate and his foot to rise. The weights cause pressure against the foot, and the user resists the pressure so that his knee will rise slowly until it forms an acute angle with the trunk.
